DAN is Your Dive Safety Association®. Because of this, you receive more than just an insurance policy. You receive all the benefits of membership, including DAN TravelAssist®, Alert Diver magazine and much more! Plus, you will know that your dues help support the DAN Mission.
Your primary medical insurance may exclude scuba diving as a hazardous recreational activity. If it covers scuba diving, it may pay only a minimal amount for chamber treatment. Many policies may not cover you when you are out of your region or out of the country. The DAN Dive Accident Insurance Plans are recognized worldwide and can be confirmed 24 hours a day through the DAN Emergency Hotline (+1-919-684-9111). The DAN levels of insurance are a secondary coverage and pay up to 100 percent of reasonable and customary costs of all remaining eligible expenses after any other coverage you may have. Even if you have comprehensive health insurance, the DAN Dive Accident Insurance Plans are available to cover co-pays and deductibles, which alone can be much more than the cost of DAN membership and insurance.
DAN Dive Accident Insurance is a secondary policy with no deductible. (Your other health insurance policies act as your primary coverage and will pay for any applicable charges first. If there is no other insurance coverage, the DAN Dive Accident Insurance will then act as your primary policy.) It will pay based on reasonable and customary charges.
DAN is not an insurance company. In the United States the underwriter of the group policy is United States Life Insurance Company in the City of New York. In Canada the underwriter of the group policy is Chartis Insurance Company of Canada. When an accident occurs, DAN works with National Baromedical Services Inc. to assist our members in submitting claims to US Life (U.S.) and Chartis (Canada).
Any DAN Member who is a recreational scuba diver may be qualified for DAN insurance. There are some residence restrictions, so please check with DAN for the latest information.
It is a prerequisite that you be a DAN Member to be eligible to purchase the DAN insurance. As a DAN Member you receive all the other member benefits as well.
Divers who call for coverage during regular business hours and verify their payment with American Express, Discover, VISA or MasterCard are insured as of the day they call. If you join online you will receive confirmation of coverage with your valid credit card payment. You will receive your introductory packet in approximately 7-10 business working days via mail.
Insurance policies must be added per diver on the family membership.
Covered Dive means a recreational dive or diving while a scuba instructor, divemaster, underwater photographer, or while performing research under the auspices and following the diving safety guidelines of the American Academy of Underwater Scientists (AAUS). A dive begins upon entry into the water and ends upon exit from the water. A Covered Dive must begin while insurance is in force. A Covered Diving Accident means DCI as a result of a Covered Dive within the 130-foot (40-meter) limit. For Preferred and Master Plans only, it means DCI or an injury as the result of a Covered Dive, regardless of the depth.
With the Preferred Plan and Master Plan, if diving equipment is lost or unintentionally damaged due to a Covered Diving Accident, DAN's dive accident insurance will pay for the real value of the equipment at the time of the loss or damage (up to $2,500). For details about coverage, please review the DAN Member Benefits Handbook. DAN offers separate equipment insurance to DAN Members through Senn, Dunn, Marsh and Roland at an additional cost.
